Assignment 2c - Type expression (Final)

Finally, I'm so relieved, here's my work!

Name: Jason Wong Zhin-Ming

ID: 1102701493

Title: More Hunger More Death

Artist statement:
The main topic is actually on 'Food shortage'. In this artwork, I chose the font type (chiller) for the word 'hunger' and 'death' (minus the 'e' in it) to make it look kind of scary, with its colour that I chose as red to show the pain and death. The orange background is actually to stimulate audience's hunger when they look at it. I made the typography as simple while playing with some of the letters as it only has three words, which is 'More', 'hunger' and 'death'. Combining them all would equal to 'More hunger More death' which means more hunger increases deaths.

Artwork treatment:
(Digital form); Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Assignment 2b - Type expression (sketches)

So here are my sketches - my ideas ...I tried to arrange how my letters are going to be. I even thought of what if it is done not digitally but handmade.

In the end, I chose this picture as reference for the final:

Assignment 2a - Type expression (Research+Mind map)

So I did my research, and based on my topic "food shortage" I've decided to portray that as hunger increases, death also increase since the word 'death' & 'hunger' is related to my topic just to also create awareness. Here's what I found in an online article:

"Of all the obscenities of war, none is as inexcusable as the deliberate slaughter of civilians. Yet much of the world is silent now, though millions of innocent Africans stand in jeopardy of extinction. These people will not die by the sword or the other traditional implements of war. Instead, they will be slain by one of the cruelest weapons of any era -- starvation. They will die slowly and painfully; in a world of abundance, they will die hungry.

And most of the dying will be done in the Horn of Africa. In Ethiopia upwards of 4.5 million people, more than four times the number wiped out by the great famine of 1984-85, may starve this year if food relief is not provided -- and soon. In Sudan, where as many as a quarter of a million people died of hunger in 1987-88, the most dire estimates suggest that 3 million could suffer the same fate by the middle of this decade. Once again the world may see those sickening images: skeletal children too weak to swat away the flies that swarm around their eyes; old people slumped against herding sticks, too weary to take another step."

Here's a video that I found in YouTube that was uploaded by pumpuriukas:
Title of the video: Every 5 seconds
Run-time: 1:01

So basically I just want to portray hunger and death in my typography. On my research on what colors that can be related....here are the colors that I have found that might be suitable for my artwork:

  •  Death (and blood) - red/black
  • Hunger: orange/brown

After doing the research, I did a mind map based on my assignment 1's topic "Food shortage" and I found that the word 'death' and 'hunger' repeats a lot in the events of food shortage, and that is why I will be using 'death' and 'hunger' for my artwork.

Assignment 2 - Type expression

Hello. For assignment 2, I have to do a 10 x 10 inches of type expression artwork which is a bit similar to my first assignment which the visual expression. For this, I will back my previously used current issues in assignment 1, "Food shortage".
