Stage08- two finalized ideas

Name: Jason Wong Zhin-Ming
Id: 1102701493
Title: Love Still Unites Us

Artist statement:
The rope that I used is to symbolize the male gender while the pink ribbon is female gender. Both are entangled to each other. I make it that way to show that both are couples, even though they have fought each other, they never leave each other and they are still together. It is because the love, a happy feeling, that they have for each other is great that they are still united. The clickable part is the love shaped buttons. Basically, the target audience are young adults.

Artist Treatment:
Photoshop, Illustrator, DSLR camera

Title: Even they have flaws

Artist statement:
The whole thing is supposed to resemble a woman's high heel shoe. Attached to the high heel shoe is a sharp pointing nail. The shoe symbolizes women. Also, it symbolizes emotions that women have. The nail symbolizes instability because of its sharp pointing downwards, which makes the shoe unbalance. In relation to that, the nail also symbolizes 'flaws'. The phrase 'Even they have flaws' is referring to that some women who have emotional issues and that they can't control it like nagging, anger. In this artwork, I made the clickable part on the orange looking round buttons. By looking at the shoe nervous is stimulated, probably because of the nail. Well, this artwork targets audience who are women and are young.

Artist Treatment:
Photoshop, Illustrator.

Stage 03 - initial ideation and conceptualization

My idea is to use photoshop/illustrator to do the high heels+ shoe, in which the emotion is nervous, expression is unstable.
For the one with the emotion where it is happy, expression is sad, I will be setting up two strings together and taking picture of it and manipulate the picture in photoshop.

Stage 02 - research & facts finding

Semantic and Semiotics
Semantics
Semantics is the study of meaning, focusing on the relation between signifiers, for example, words, phrases, and symbols.
The word “semantics” denotes a range of many ideas, from the popular to the highly technical. It is often used in ordinary language to denote a problem of understanding that comes down to word selection or connotation. This problem of understanding has been the subject of many formal inquiries, over a long period of time, most notably in the field of formal semantics. In linguistics, it is the study of interpretation of signs or symbols as used by agents or communities within particular circumstances and contexts. Within this view, sounds, facial expressions, body language, and proxemics have semantic (meaningful) content, and each has several branches of study. In written language, such things as paragraph structure and punctuation have semantic content; in other forms of language, there is other semantic content.

Semiotics
Semiotics, is the study of signs and sign processes (semiosis), indication, designation, likeness, analogy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication. Semiotics is closely related to the field of linguistics, which, for its part, studies the structure and meaning of language more specifically. Semiotics is often divided into three branches:

  • Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their denotata, or meaning
  • Syntactics: Relations among signs in formal structures
  • Pragmatics: Relation between signs and the effects they have on the people who use them

So anway, based on my 2 chosen ideas:

Idea # 1 - Emotion: Happy
                Expression: Love

Description:
2 Warm colours string (thin) and thick string are entangled to each other, representing love of two sexes, athough they may have been in rough times but they still unite with each other.

Research:
"omnia vincit amor", Latin phrase from Eclogue X by Virgil. It means love conquers all.
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_phrases:_O#omnia_vincit_amor)

Also, according to my research on love, love realy does conquer all just like there's this one man's determination to prove doctors wrong when girlfriend was declared dead after being hit by 18-wheel truck. This happens in the UK.

Idea # 2 - Emotion: Nervous
                Expression: Unstable

Description:
There's nails attached to the shoe. The nails becomes the high heel of theshoe. The whole symbolizes women having emotional flaws as they are no perfect.

Research:
According to Sarah, "Every attempt I had made to wear heels I felt off balanced; unstable; and constricted in my movement. I loved the idea of heels but came to the conclusion they were not for me. Since then, I have spoken with many other women who have said the same thing. It wasn’t until about a year ago..maybe even less…that I came to a realization.
Heels did not feel good because they showed me all my flaws."

Of all my ideas there can only be two ideas that will proceed to be finalized as the final outcome. It is the 2nd and 10th picture that was chosen. So, there you have it!
