Assignment 1c - Visual Expression (Final artwork)

 Name: Jason Wong Zhin-Ming
ID: 1102701493
Title: Food shortage

Artist Statement:
My final artwork is more of a sculpture. I actually used plasticine, A3 size mounting board, Photoshop and rope to do the artwork. Notice that the frail looking hands are those desperate humans due to not enough food. The human figures is to show how desperate they are as they would do anything to grab food even though the bread has gone mouldy. The scythe or otherwise known as the grim reaper's weapon symbolizes death during food shortage. Visually, for me, I think its sad but its also disturbing to look at.

Artwork Treatment:
Plasticine, mounting board, Adobe Phothoshop and rope

Assignment 1b - Visual Expression (sketches)

Here are my development of ideas...

The picture shows how the humans are when they are going through starvation because of food shortage.

The picture shows how desperate the human is to find food and would conduct stealing.

Well, these picture shows how desperate humans are that they'll fight for food.

Assignment 1a - visual expression (research + mind map)

For assignment 1, I was told to produce an artwork based on a current issue from anywhere in the world and it has to be visual expression. For me, I've chosen 'Food shortage' as the topic for my artwork. Here's what I found on food shortage that has been an issue in some of the South African countries.

In Angola, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe, more than 16 million people may go hungry in the months to come.
Much of southern Africa continues to face severe food shortages, largely the result of one of the worst droughts in a decade. Recent rainfall has been erratic and insufficient at best, and destructive at worst. Malawi and Mozambique were among the hardest hit by Tropical Storm Delfina -- bridges, roads and railways were damaged, leaving several thousand people cut off from the aid they so desperately need. The people most affected by the storm had their homes destroyed and lost any crops they had managed to grow.
Hundreds of thousands of families throughout the region can't grow enough food to survive. Farmers have less to sell in the markets, and the price of what is available is out of reach for most poor families. Even the game and wild fruits that communities rely on in times of trouble have been depleted. Many families have been forced to sell their livestock and other possessions to buy food. But this is only a temporary solution. Severe hunger - even starvation - threatens millions, particularly among the most vulnerable: children, the elderly, and pregnant and nursing women.

Here's some videos that I found on YouTube that's related to food shortage:

Here's how the reality of food shortage is like, for say, in Africa.

Yes, it is sad to look at the pictures above. For this assignment, I want to express sadness on food shortage issue simply because it really does break my heart to look know that this issue exist and its getting worst.

First exercise: Emotions

Hello, in this exercise,  i was told to draw anything based on emotion and so I did. Here's what I did:
                                         ---------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emotion: Sad and happy
Reason : Happy because I am always on a holiday mood (notice the fireworks), but sad because of war is happening in some countries today (notice when turning the paper upside down).
